For more than two decades, my work has explored the intersection of food, culture, diplomacy, and international development—showing how what we eat connects us not only to our heritage, but also to one another. Today, I write, speak, and collaborate on the conversations shaping culture, identity, and our shared future.

My Story
The journey behind the work.
My journey has never followed a conventional path.
It has taken me from professional kitchens and recipe development to academic research, international conferences, media interviews, entrepreneurial ventures, and conversations with organizations working across food systems, international development, and global health.
Along the way, I became known for my work in halal food and founded My Halal Kitchen, one of the earliest platforms dedicated to halal cooking, recipes, and food culture. What began as a personal passion grew into an internationally recognized brand, opening doors to research, publishing, consulting, and speaking opportunities around the world.
But the deeper I worked within global food systems, the more I realized something important.
Food was never the destination.
It was the gateway.
Behind every ingredient lies a story of migration, agriculture, trade, identity, history, economics, faith, climate, and culture. Understanding food means understanding people.
Today, my work has evolved beyond any single cuisine, region, or dietary tradition.
I now focus on the broader role food plays in diplomacy, cultural understanding, sustainable agriculture, Mediterranean living, international cooperation, and the human connections that begin around a shared table.
Every article I write, every conversation I facilitate, and every project I pursue is driven by one belief:

My mission is to advance cultural understanding through the invitation to a table of food. I believe that culinary diplomacy can strengthen international relationships, preserve cultural heritage, encourage sustainable food systems, improve public dialogue, and foster greater appreciation for the diverse traditions that shape our world.
Through writing, speaking, consulting, broadcasting, and education, I aim to connect ideas across disciplines—including agriculture, trade, public health, tourism, hospitality, history, and international affairs—to inspire thoughtful conversations that transcend borders.

BIOGRAPHY
Yvonne Maffei, MA is an author, cultural trade strategist, researcher, and international speaker whose work explores the intersection of culinary diplomacy, cultural intelligence, Mediterranean food systems, agriculture, trade, and global food culture.
She is the founder of My Halal Kitchen and has authored cookbooks and numerous articles on food, culture, and international cuisine. Her research has examined halal food systems, consumer behavior, and the global halal economy, while her professional work has included recipe development, consulting, public speaking, and educational programming.
Over the course of her career, Yvonne has presented at universities, international conferences, nonprofit organizations, and global institutions, contributing to conversations surrounding food systems, sustainability, cultural heritage, and international development.
Today, she continues to write, speak, and collaborate with organizations interested in using food as a bridge between cultures and as a catalyst for dialogue, innovation, and cooperation.
